This occurs when the tough band of tissue that extends from the outside of the hip to the outside of the knee (the iliotibial band) becomes so tight that it rubs against the outer part of the femur. Baker's cyst is a joint fluid-filled enlargement of the joint capsule located at the back of the knee. The development of a Baker's cyst is due to increased production of synovial fluid as a result of knee joint osteoarthritis or a meniscus tear.
